Hiring - The right way

After 30 years in Silicon valley I learned one true thing about hiring a good employee.
Hire a smart person.
All those resume hunting HR departments just don't understand. You are not looking for that perfect resume match, your looking for a smart , creative person who can think out of the box. That's the key!
Some of my best hires were from other industeries. They brought fresh perspectives to the table and in some cases new materials and technologies. Don't get stuck on looking for that candidate that's done exactly what you need before, because the chances are that they will bring old solutions with them too.
When interviewing you absolutely need to use behavioral questions. I got fooled once in my career hiring what I thought was a great college grad and boy what a disaster. The kid had NO motivation. All I can say is thank god for the occasional layoff. I got my butt into an interviewing techniques class after that one.
